오덕교총신대학교(B.A.)와 총신대학교 신학연구원(M. Div.), 총신대학교 대학원(Th. M.)에서 공부한 후 미국 예일대학교(Yale University, Divinity School)에서 연구원으로 연구하였고, 필라델피아에 있는 웨스트민스터신학교(Westminster Theological Seminary)에서 종교개혁 및 종교개혁 후기에 관한 논문인 “교회의 부활: 존 코튼의 교회 개혁에 관한 종말론적 이해”(Churches Resurrection: John Cotton’s Eschatological Understanding of the Ecclesiastical Reformation)로 1987년 철학박사(Ph.D.) 학위를 받았다.
